Jet Airways to have 1,400 pilots by 2008
MUMBAI: Jet Airways is planning to more than double its existing strength of 550 pilots by 2008.
Confirming the development, Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, chief executive officer, Jet Airways said, "To cater to our expanding fleet and operations, we are aggressively looking at having 1400 pilots by the year 2008."
Industry observers feel that such an aggressive hiring target might also be in anticipation of many Air Sahara pilots not joining Jet Airways post the Jet-Sahara merger. Recently, Kingfisher Airlines had confirmed that it received several job applications from Air Sahara pilots. According to sources, currently Jet Airways has a pilots shortage of around 10%.
However, Jet has no plans to poach pilots from other airlines in India. "The pilots will be mostly expatriates, and in-house pilots who will be trained on our new simulator to be delivered this year", Mr Prock-Schauer said. However, he declined to comment on the amount earmarked for the hiring plan. "Jet Airways has an order for 20 aircraft and deliveries are due to begin early in 2007. "With our fleet expanding at this rate, we would definitely need hundreds of pilots", he added.
Air Sahara to be Jet’s 100% subsidiary
Full-service carrier Jet Airways will operate Air Sahara as a 100% subsidiary until it gets approval from the High Court for the merger. Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal said, "Air Sahara will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Jet until the High Court gives its approval, so that we can enjoy all the infrastructure facilities of Air Sahara." There is no change in the enterprise value of $500 million since there were no discussions on re-negotiations. "Jet will continue to advise Air Sahara like the way we have been doing since the last 60 days", Mr Goyal added.
